John Wilson

Ohio


 
John Wilson is the NRCS Ohio State Conservationist, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and has worked with the agency for 37 years.

John began his career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service as a student trainee in Adrian, Michigan (MI). His first career appointment with the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) was a Soil Conservationist in Van Buren, MI and later was reassigned to Centreville, MI before accepting a District Conservationist (DC) position in Pontiac, MI. He worked as DC for 5 years before changing positions to assist the local partners in Southeast Michigan with the Southeast Michigan River Basin Study as an Urban Resource Conservationist.

In 1998 he accepted the position of Assistant State Conservationist for Field Operations in Northwest Ohio. In 2007 he moved to Columbus to become the State Administrative Officer and was instrumental in leading Ohio’s response to the Audit.

He acted as the National Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Officer in Washington, D. C. on two occasions and acted as State Conservationist several months in Ohio in 2005 and 2021 as well as Utah in 2011.

In 2014 John accepted the Assistant State Conservationist for Programs position in Columbus, OH. He provided leadership to the programs staff that administered the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, Conservation Stewardship Program, Regional Conservation Partnership Program and the Conservation Innovative Grants program.

In June of 2021, John was selected as Deputy State Conservationist in Little Rock, Arkansas, and worked with the State Conservationist to provide leadership in the day-to-day operations. During his time as Deputy State Conservationist, John also completed a detail assignment as acting State Conservationist in Nebraska.

John is a native of Mississippi and graduate of Alcorn State University where he holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Education.

John and his wife Carmala have two children.
